Street Project

Introduction
Alyth joined with Comrie
and Letham
to participate in a Perthshire pilot study of the 'Street by Street
Energy Audit and Insulation Programme funded by the Scottish
Government's Climate Challenge Fund. AEG managed the project
locally through the ACAT
initiative. AEG worked closely with our other
partners Scottish and Southern Energy, Perth & Kinross Council
and
SCARF, together with various other organisations as required, to make
our project a success.
Project
Summary
Our eventual aim was to
offer a free
energy audit, and
insulation and draught-proof measures at a reduced cost, to every
household in Alyth and New Alyth (population approx. 2,400; approx
1,400
homes). To achieve this our project included:
- A
range of community engagement events to inform and
involve
local people, organisations and businesses.
- Employment
of a local Project Co-ordinator from
January 2009
for an initial 12 months on an average of 2 days per week basis (this
person to also help implement the other energy related projects).
- Planning
all issues relating to the selection and
employment
of local Energy Advisors to carry out surveys throughout the town
(January - October).
- Scheduling
all issues in relation to the mentoring and
on
the job training of the local Energy Advisors by qualified personnel
(e.g. SCARF).
- Planning
all issues relating to insulation
requirements and
preparing works programmes and installation contracts (June - December).
- Initiate
and co-ordinate all issues relative to the
training
of local builders/companies to carry out work by qualified trainers
(e.g. SCARF) - [April - June onwards].
- Consultation
and awareness raising events and
publications
to support all aspects of above (January 2010 onwards).
- Building
a local organisational structure to support
this
work.

How
did we do?
- We
distributed Home Energy Checklists (HEC) to some 1,400 homes in Alyth
and New Alyth.
- Working
with the Energy Savings Trust, we produced
Home Energy Reports for everyone who responded to the HECs.
- Our
Energy Advisors carried out individual surveys of
383 households giving advice on a wide range of energy saving measures.
- ACAT
helped
more than 100 residents towards low cost energy tariffs; provided
access to subsidised roof and cavity wall insulation and draught
stripping and distributed 500 low energy lightbulbs to more than 100
homes.
What's
happening now?
- We're
planning to run a further stage of the project
to include training local contractors to treat those "hard-to-heat"
homes -
those with solid, non cavity,
walls; coombed roofs, etc.
- We've
already carried out some "Before"
and "After" thermal imaging
surveys
and will be re-launching that initiative in the autumn (remember, the
first 15 applicants will get a free survey and report). You can find
out more about that here.
- We're
developing our thoughts on producing an ACAT
newsletter and we'd love to
have your input on that. Let us know what you'd like to see in there.
- We're
taking a fresh look at our feasibility study on
Travel Activities in Alyth and the viability of creating a Hot Office
facility in the community. Find out more about these here.
- And,
obviously, we've now got the new website up and
running.
